While I’m not opposed to these efforts I do wonder why they decide to use GameMaker for 3D over a proper 3D solution other than the novelty of coding a 3D game in an app. Made for 2D without any explicit visual preview of levels other than the 2D objects you put in the rooms. You do notice most GameMaker 3D games have blocky level geometry and only the most basic of physics unless you’re a code guru. With so many 3D engines that can make good looking 3D games, why use GameMaker, it’s obviously never going to compete with Unity or the BGE in this regard particulary since last I checked its been years since the last new version release of that program. I have made over 20 games with GameMaker until a few years ago when I stopped using it, but I have not touched its 3D stuff because I knew even then it’s not designed for great looking 3D games.
Well it was originally primarily a 2d engine, I don’t know the details but I think they made the jump to 3d because that’s what the userbase was asking for. I haven’t used the 3d engine but if it is as you described then it is obviously meant for ease of use, not for complex levels you will see in a next gen game.People use gamemaker because it’s easy to use. Not everybody has had the same experience as you in regards to the quality of the 3d engine so they are quite happy with what gamemaker provides.
I haven’t touched gamemaker in probably 6 years but I recall the drag and drop interface being what attracted me to it originally. With that in mind most of the people aren’t the code gurus that can begin to understand the other 3d engines that are avaliable and how to use them. Actually, Game maker is pretty popular among indie game makers who want to mockup a 2D game.is another game making app that is similar to Game Maker, but has a different sort of ‘logic’ system and in my opinion is much better. It also has some faux 3D effects (technically it’s true 3D, but you can’t really do ‘3D’ things with it). You could basically make the old-style GTA games with it, or maybe something like Yoshi’s Island with the odd 3D effect going on. Someone actually made a crude 3D geometry editor in that app, which is quite an accomplishment given that the python integration isn’t complete and is not working in the releases yet. The mind boggles.Oh, and it’s open source.
Couldn’t the same be applied to the old blender game engine laughs. The more complicated the design (actual game graphics /features) the more complicated the work, most likely GameMaker is rather simple and natural to certain people’s backgrounds.Additionally it’s not a new application, so there’s likely to be a community that has followed it.Third, engines such as blender’s have only just managed to be capable of semi-decent graphics /features, and their still rather tempremental, still in devlopment and has rather significant performance issues So where’s your point exactly CD? People that start making a game with 3d most of the time don’t even have basics knowledges of 2d gameplay.A third dimension is already too much for them. The videos you showed us (sonic) actually seem to provide more fun for the user than 95% of the fps on the bge forums. (Oh well, some of them have fancy ocean shader/bloom/dof do we care?).I don’t know about GameMaker, but the limits of the tools surely help people to focus on gameplay and fun.Same should apply to BGE beginners asking for millions of poly when they can’t even optimize their scenes. As a user, I don’t care the tool. I just want to play fun games. As a developer, if you use a tool that you know well and that fits your project, you can reach your goal.
That’s what I would answer to somebody asking “ Why do people bother trying to make 3D games in Blender Game Engine anyway?” (over Unity, UDK).From what I’ve seen, a lot of GameMaker users are getting the things done.Knowledge of the tool, knowledge of the gameplay basics. That might answer to your question.
